If you may wonder: why should hackers be afraid of a few words?

You might think, “It’s just a name, right?” Wrong!

Your WiFi’s Service Set Identifier (SSID), aka your network’s name, is a hacker’s first impression of your network.

Let’s put it this way: would you rather try to break into a house that’s clearly alarmed and labeled “Fort Knox,” or one that looks like a random Tuesday with a generic name?

Hackers, like the rest of us, are susceptible to psychology. Hacker deterrent + funny wi-fi names can make them think twice before messing with your WiFi name.

Keeping your WiFi secure

  • Change the default login: hackers often know the default credentials for common router brands. The first thing you should do is change the default username and password for your router’s admin panel. Ensure you don’t give out any sensitive information through your WiFi network name.
  • Keep strong passwords: make them long, complex, and unique (a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters works great). And make sure you change your passwords regularly.
  • WPA3 encryption: this is the latest Wi-Fi security protocol and offers good protection against hackers. If your router doesn’t support it, use WPA2 with AES encryption.
  • Check for firmware updates: keep your router’s software up-to-date. Manufacturers regularly release updates to patch security vulnerabilities.
  • Use a VPN: a Virtual Private Network encrypts your internet traffic, making it much harder for hackers to intercept your data, especially on open networks.

Over to you…

Making your network name creative is a fun, low-effort way to deter hackers. It’s like a virtual “beware of dog” sign, but way more entertaining.

What are some of your favorite WiFi names to scare hackers away that you’d like to share? Drop it in the comments.

Let’s make the Internet less hospitable for hackers, one punny Wi-Fi name at a time, by coming up with hilarious wifi names to confuse them.
